Three letters, endless marketing, and almost no clarity. Exfoliating acids get filed under one giant "acids are good for you" umbrella. It tells you nothing about which acid, at what strength, doing what. So let's separate the category from the noise. AHA, BHA, PHA. What is each one actually dissolving, who is it for, and why does the same ingredient feel like nothing on one person's skin and like a chemical peel on someone else's?
To understand each acid, lets start with solubility. AHAs: glycolic, lactic, mandelic, citric, are water-soluble. They work on the skin's surface, loosening the "glue" holding dead cells together so they shed instead of sitting there dulling everything. BHAs, namely salicylic acid, are oil-soluble, which means they can travel down into a pore and clear it from the inside.
